There are hundreds of native and non-native forbs in the sagebrush steppe, but which are valuable as sage-grouse food? Sage-grouse lack a stony gizzard to digest hard structures so they are limited in what they can eat. A review of the literature on forbs utilized by sage-grouse, knowledge of plant chemical composition, and plant family characteristics are used to develop plant categories. Grouping species into palatability groups make field sampling and analysis more reasonable and assist in the development of management recommendations for sage-grouse. Roger Rosentreter, BLM Idaho Retired State Botanist, presents.
