National Park Service policies concerning fire have changed over the years from no policy at all in the early years, through years of absolute fire suppression, to a period of experimentation and refinement with a full spectrum of integrated fire management strategies. During much of this time, the Service was influenced by other agencies and organizations but is now emerging as a leader in the fire community.
