To provide adequate resource protection in alpine and subalpine areas, managers need to expand their perspective and focus on ecosystem and landscape-level management. Single-resource and microsite focuses stymie integrated management and protection plans. A landscape perspective is outlined for the Northern Rocky Mountains, interpreting climatic, landform, topographic, and distribution factors and their relation to vegetation mosaics.
