Data from real wildland fires are critical to running and developing simulations, predictive and decision-support tools, and fundamental wildland fire science. However, collecting observations on active fires is a significant challenge, especially in an era when increasingly sophisticated models require data streams from multiple disciplines of science. The Fire and Smoke Model Evaluation Experiment (FASMEE) was conceived to organize the collection of observations across multiple disciplines that serve the wildland fire modeling community by advancing models of fire behavior and effects, smoke movement and transport, and the underlying science as well as the tools that are derived from them. In 2021, the USDA Forest Service designated FASMEE a Priority R&D Project, and the team of researchers are now preparing to resume field data collection campaigns.

This webinar will provide context and background information for audiences who are interested in learning more and/or who are new to the project. We will also provide updates on recent and upcoming activities and details on future involvement opportunities for researchers who may be interested in participating in the field campaigns that are planned for 2023, 2024, and beyond.
